Seattle P-I Goes Online-Only; SF Chron Lives OnMarch 17, 2009
After months of speculation, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer prints its final issue today. It will continue as a Web-only publication, which will save owner Hearst Co. plenty of money. The largest paper to go online-only, the Seattle P-I news staff is shrinking from 165 to 20, and the company is hiring 20 people to run the business side. Another of the company's papers, the San Francisco Chronicle, is officially okay after its union voted 333-33 to accept cost-cutting concessions, including the elimination of some benefits and 150 jobs. The paper did lose $50 million last year, so one has to wonder ...
