Globe Workers Get 23 Percent Pay Cut; Observer Slashes Staff

While the
Boston Globe's union of delivery truck drivers
approved more than $2.5 million in wage and benefit cuts, its largest union -- representing nearly 700 editorial, advertising, and business office workers --
rejected a proposed deal. The paper's owner, The New York Times Co., responded by almost immediately declaring an impasse in negotiations and imposing a 23 percent pay cut. Members of the union
said it voted against the deal -- which consisted of an eight-percent pay cut, a week-long furlough, and other cutbacks -- because management didn't take an equal amount of concessions. The two sides will continue to negotiate,...
