NYT, WSJ Plan Bay Area Editions; Observer Launches Mag

With the San Francisco Chronicle struggling to stay afloat, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal see an opportunity: Both papers will launch Bay Area editions in the near future, aimed at recruiting new readers and advertisers. The Times' Richard Pérez-Peña wonders if this is "the first glimpse at a new strategy by national newspapers to capitalize on the contraction of regional papers," but you have to question whether it's going to work. Given the area's Internet focus, can a print product -- even one of the NYT or WSJ's quality -- really succeed?...
