Townsquare Media Drains AOL; Conde Seeks Digital Acquisitions

December 14, 2010
Is it more amazing that Time Inc. created a senior-level position to oversee digital strategy, or that it took them this long to do so? Regardless, Randall Rothenberg fills the new position, moving from the Interactive Advertising Bureau where he had been chief executive since 2007. The hire marks the biggest move of Jack Griffin's short tenure at the top of Time Inc. Rothenberg tells Advertising Age, "If I have any strength at all, it's knowing that I don't know a lot of things." Sounds like a man who's ready to throw ideas at the wall and see what sticks. Not a bad strategy in the digital world, but you hope he has some semblance of a plan...

The final number of magazine launches against magazine closures in 2010? 193 to 176. Food and regional publications led the way, while the home category suffered the highest amount of killings. But still, way better than 2009 when 596 magazines went to the big bin in the sky, although 324 were launched that year. Print continues its inevitable consolidation... Hearst Corp. looks like it's increasingly interested in purchasing Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S... Redbook promotes one staffer and adds another on the advertising side... The Associated Press kills its internship program for 2011. The move, along with the decision not to send staffers to journalism recruitment conventions, is a cost-cutting measure. The organization says it will resume both practices in 2012...

Conde Nast is on the prowl -- for companies, that is. The publishing giant's parent Advance Publications launches an M&A fund and hands Andrew Siegel the keys (and $500 million). He'll focus on acquiring digital ventures, most likely in the early stages of their development. Because that went so well with Reddit.)... Sharon Waxman puts together an impressive list containing those laid off or otherwise gone from Variety. It's a massive group of names, although The Wrap founder has the contacts to get the story right (and the axes to grind)... The Awl needs a managing editor. It could either be the best job in the world or the worst... New York tech jobs, so hot right now. Speaking of which, former AOL EVP Bill Wilson brings a slew of his old cohorts to his new Townsquare Media gig as the company attempts to build an online presence for local radio stations... Philadelphia acquires Foobooz and founder Arthur Etchells comes onboard as digital product manager...

Melinda Mullin steps in as director of publicity for HarperOne. She comes over from MRM pr+marketing where she was principal... Alejandro Leal joins BrandingIron Worldwide as a consulting director for the Latin Division. He had been producer and art director at Match Productions... And there are changes at BerlinRosen Public Affairs, CNN, and more...
