In a surprise move, AOL buys the Huffington Post for $315 million. The sale came together in less than a month. Arianna Huffington will take over as editor-in-chief across AOL's sites and nets somewhere between $18 and $100 million. HuffPo CEO Eric Hippeau steps down to join Lerer Ventures, while the company's ad sales boss Greg Coleman departs as well. There will be some firings, but AOL will be able to grow its local journalism initiatives, and the startup -- founded in 2005 for a mere $1 million -- will expand to a massive scale. You know what this isn't? AOL-Time Warner (at least hopefully not). Next Media Animation puts it all in context while Paul Carr of Techcrunch, the site AOL acquired for $25 million, jokingly approves this message. The Awl, maybe not, and Dan Lyons writes, "It's a slow-motion train wreck and will end in disaster." So, jury still out?...
Keith Olbermann moves to
Current TV, a story first reported
by The New York Times
. The former MSNBC host will anchor
a newscast five nights a week. He also gets a chief news officer title and a stake in the network founded by Al Gore
. PaidContent likens the deal
to the one Oprah Winfrey
and Discovery Communications put together... While CBS News and Sports president Sean McManus leaves
the news chief position, Jeff Fager
gets bumped up to chairman of the news division, and David Rhodes
becomes president. Andy Gray
and Richard Keys land
radio gigs at TalkSport just weeks after departing Sky Sports under duress...
Stephen Adler replaces David Schlesinger as editor-in-chief of Thomson Reuters. Adler, previously at BusinessWeek, had been head of editorial content for professional clients at TR since 2010, while the man whose job he takes moves to chairman of the company's China offerings... There are some changes over at Vanity Fair. Michael Hogan has been upped to executive digital editor, Christopher Tennant joins as online editor, and Michael Carl assumes the fashion market director post. W's market director Treena Lombardo replaces Carl as Allure's fashion director. And Talya Cousins departs W as senior accessories/jewelry editor for a position as director of merchandising at Open Sky...
Crain's Chicago Business names Jim Kirk chief of editorial operations... Conde Nast digital head Sarah Chubb departs after 20 years... PR people from big media continue switching jobs left and right... And there are changes at Widemeyer Communications, Harman International and more...
