The New York Times announces its new paywall. Readers will get 20 articles for free each month -- a figure that roughly 15 percent of users reach -- before being asked to pay either $15 per month or $195 for the year. Of course, there are plenty of ways to get around the wall, making it more of a convenience charge than anything else. (And, we suppose, a way to support excellent journalism.) Felix Salmon calls the whole affair "weird" for a number of reasons, but this one's our favorite: "If you want to use the NYT's iPad app [and live in New York], you're marginally better off subscribing to the print newspaper on Sundays and throwing it away unread than you are just subscribing to the app on its own." In many ways, however, it's just nice the plan finally came into effect; we've been discussing it forever...
