In a shocking decision, Bill Keller announces he is stepping away from his executive editor gig at The New York Times to write full time for the paper. Jill Abramson, the current managing editor, will replace him. (The news, of course, was tweeted and instagramed for posterity.) Abramson took a stint on the digital side last year, a move that many think prepped her for the position. Some key figures will look to thrive under her tenure. Capital's Tom McGeveran should have the last word, because he has the most poignant take: "One of the reasons Abramson is the best person to run the Times at this moment is that she is one of the very few people in the building... who really understands what the Times is and what it can do for good or evil, and who understands her own responsibility in the job of running it."...

Hearst does not waste any time chopping staff after its $919 million takeover of Lagardere Group's international magazine unit. Keith Kelly hears about 100 of the 550 staffers will be laid off, roughly 18 percent of the workforce. Steve Parr, CEO of HFM, moves to a consultant role within the new parent company. Elle publisher Kevin Martinez gets bumped down to associate publisher while Esquire publisher Kevin O'Malley moves into Martinez's spot (and also adds chief revenue officer and senior vice president to his business card)... Tina Brown steals Leslie Bennetts from Vanity Fair (where Brown hired her 23 years ago)... Time Inc. loses Josh Quittner to digital startup Flipboard... Beth-ann Eason joins Conde Nast as senior vice president, general manager...

Brian Williams' new show grabs Rome Hartman as executive producer. He had been in the same position with BBC News. It's a great hire for the NBC anchor's yet-to-be-named program... Ofelia Casillas and Frank Benenati join the Obama re-election campaign as regional press secretaries. They are both long-time journalists... James C. Duff is the new president of the Newseum. He joins from the U.S. court system, where he was the chief administrative officer...

Deadspin is building a roster worthy of Grantland.com. Tommy Craggs, initially offered a job by the soon-to-launch ESPN project, is staying with A.J. Daulerio and the gang while Tom Scocca joins as managing editor. Dom Cosentino -- who has an awesome beard if Twitter is any indication -- comes aboard as an editorial assistant... Former NPR CEO Vivian Schiller joins NBC News as chief digital officer three months after resigning from the public radio spotlight following multiple controversies... And there are changes at Details, the Los Angeles Times and more...
