Layoffs at L.A. Times; Former Current TV CEO Returns

July 29, 2011
The Los Angeles Times lays off a "small number" of employees. Among those departing: columnist Tim Rutten, assistant business editor Sharon Bernstein and NBA writer Mark Heisler. California editor Ashley Dunn sent out an amazing pep talk memo that included the following: "Deadline is coming. Swig that Mountain Dew, suck deeply on that Marlboro Ultralight, tell your editor to move that [expletive] story."... Current TV CEO Mark Rosenthal is out. He's been with the network started by Al Gore for the past six years, the last two as the top man on the totem pole. Joel Hyatt, who served as CEO before Rosenthal's elevation, will get the title once more. The outgoing man played a huge role bringing Keith Olbermann to the network, but reportedly clashed with Hyatt over decisions... Katie Boyle jumps to Brian Williams's show where she'll be a senior producer. She had been in the same position at the CBS Evening News...

Tim Gaughan bucks the trend, moving from Bloomberg to CBS News. The financial channel had been flexing its muscles with plenty of recent hires, but the head of newsgathering leaves to be director of digital newsgathering and senior producer... Jeffrey Schneider moves to NBC as executive vice president, business affairs... Amy Introcaso-Davis, senior VP of original programming and development for Oxygen, steps down...

Town & Country's Jay Fielden snags Anna Wintour's former assistant. Sophie Pera will be fashion market editor. She had been associate fashion editor and previously served as the Vogue editrix's assistant. Kevin Conley also joins as arts editor... Jennifer Barnett is The Atlantic's new managing editor. She joins from Parks & Recreations (the magazine in Virginia, not the television show)... News of the World reporters are being offered jobs in Siberia...

Yelp hires Move Inc. CFO Rob Krolik to take over the same position at the site. Despite rumors to the contrary, Yelp plans to IPO as scheduled. Krolik will be key in making that process run as smoothly as possible... Moviefone taps Mike Ryan as senior writer... And there are changes at the Washington Post, MSNBC, and more...
