Media World Rattled by the End of Two Eras
August 26, 2011
Two words: Steve. Jobs

that sent the media world into a frenzy (and tech bloggers hurtling back to their computers) Wednesday evening. The longtime head of the fantastically influential company
felt he could no longer perform his duties due to his declining health. He'll remain on as chairman of the board and will continue to help develop products, but it's certainly the end of an era
. Tim Cook takes over the top spot
at Apple, a succession plan that had been in place since Jobs' health began to fail. The future is now for the little i and the big A...
It was a big few days of news about two men usually covering the media stories. First, Jim Romenesko announced
his "semi-retirement" from Poynter. He will continue writing for them and also launch a blog of his own name, but will do so on a part-time basis. (So, you know, a few posts a day instead of eight or more.) Meanwhile, American Journalism Review publishes
a long love letter to Jack Shafer
just hours before Slate lays off
the longtime media critic (along with Tim Noah
, June Thomas
and Juliet Lapidos
). Shafer will continue writing
for Slate in some capacity. Both men will be missed, although we certainly haven't heard the last from either of them...
