AP Shows Political Muscle; A Bittersweet NYT Mag Jump

There's some good news coming out of the Associated Press. Washington Bureau chief Sally Buzbee announces that the political editing desk is almost up and running, armed with new names including editor Michele Salcedo. Other appointments are coming in the near future, but Phil Elliott and newcomer Kasie Hunt will head the GOP coverage while Ken Thomas joins the already existing White House team to focus on Barack Obama's reelection campaign. It's nice to hear the embattled wire service is staffing up in anticipation of what should be a massively covered campaign...

The New York Times Magazine loses Tony Gervino to Hearst. Hugo Lindgren is sad but also happy... Chicago hires Elizabeth Fenner as editor-in-chief. She had been assistant managing editor at Money and executive editor of Women's Health before that... Dan Josephs is the new design director at Coastal Living. He leaves Travel + Leisure where he was its consulting art director...

USA Today signs up Laura Del Greco as vice president of client solutions. She had been vice president of sales programming strategy for Turner Entertainment Sales... CQ promotes John Donnelly to editor. He had been defense writer at the publication for the past seven years... The Washington Examiner fills Freeman Klopott's City Hall beat with Liz Farmer. The two-year veteran will be replaced as well...

Jeanne Meserve leaves CNN. Her finale: reporting on Hurricane Irene. Not a bad way to go out... Alison Stewart is leaving PBS's Need to Know. She's going to write a book... Twitter recruits former FCC aide Colin Crowell. He joins as head of global public policy and joins Adam Sharp as the second man in the Washington, D.C., office... And there are changes at Clear Channel Radio, USA Today, and more...
