The WSJ Europe Publisher Walks; The Times Offers Buyouts

The Wall Street Journal Europe loses publisher Andrew Langhoff over a scandal. "Because the agreement could leave the impression that news coverage can be influenced by commercial relationships, as publisher with executive oversight, I believe that my resignation is now the most honorable course," he wrote in the email. His departure is a result of the allegations that WSJE was purchasing its own papers to boost circulation. News Corp executives panicked, and Langhoff was left with only one choice. (Dow Jones disputed The Guardian's reporting, but it did not matter for the publisher.) Elsewhere in the land of Rupert, rumors are flying that Josh Bernstein may be leaving The Daily for network news. In addition to being the tablet's best investigative reporter, Bernstein is one of its staunchest advocates...

The New York Times will buy out up to 20 journalists. The reductions are the first major ones since late 2009. Jill Abramson says there will not be any layoffs in the newsroom. Open positions on the business side will also be eliminated. Analysts around the industry expect soft third quarter earnings, which presumably led to the buyouts. Nothing good comes from the phrase "in the midst of a deteriorating advertising climate."... Politico parts with Kendra Marr after her editors discovered at least seven instances of plagiarism. Insiders blame pressure and sloppiness for her mistakes, not any malicious intent...

The New Yorker takes New York's Emily Nussbaum. The Approval Matrix creator will be the magazine's TV critic. Meanwhile, Adam Moss hires Jenny Kang as fashion editor... Elle signs up Blair Schlumbom as associate publisher. She had been in the same position at Teen Vogue... Time launches a new opinion vertical for its site with former Newsweek editor-in-chief Jon Meacham at the head...

Lee Cowan is the new national correspondent at CBS News. He worked at NBC for the past four years after leaving The Eye where he started in 1996. He earned a champagne toast by coming back... It is official: Ted Koppel will be special correspondent at Rock Center With Brian Williams. (Ugh, that name!)... HBO Sports snags Ken Hershman from Showtime...

Brian Lakamp is the president of Clear Channel Digital. Previously, he served as executive vice president of digital media at the company... Twitter loses VP of engineering Mike Abbott. He'll do more investing... And there are changes at the Los Angeles Times, Interview and more...
