AOL Bleeds Top Execs; Clinton's Critics

November 18, 2011
AOL is losing people left and right. Brad Garlinghouse, president of commerce and applications, departs because he feels under-appreciated (and rightly so). His final tweet as an AOL employee borrowed a Steve Jobs quote: "When sales guys run the company, product guys don't matter so much, and a lot of them just turn off." Heather Harde also says goodbye. She has been CEO of TechCrunch. Elsewhere at TC, Sarah Lacy is out. She had a smaller role in the blog in the past, but her departure is still a massive blow because of the name recognition she boasted. Motor Trend promotes executive editor Edward Loh to editor-in-chief. He replaces Angus MacKenzie who moves up to chief content officer of the parent company, Source Interlink Media. Editor-at-large Ron Kiino takes over Loh's spot... Sixteen staffers are out in the Orlando Sentinel newsroom, including movie critic Roger Moore (not the man who played James Bond)... Bonnie Fuller hires Carlos Lamadrid as EVP, publisher, at HollywoodLife.com. He previously served as chief brand officer for Women's Day Brand Group...

The knives are coming out with regard to Chelsea Clinton's NBC gig. Specifically, from New York Post's Andrea Peyser, who writes, "Chelsea has already interviewed not one — but two! — people on camera. Those two people would be her mom and her dad." Clinton will donate her salary to charity... Joy Behar will leave HLN at the end of the year. She will remain co-host of The View...

Owen Van Natta sees his role at Zynga reduced. The chief business officer will become a strategic advisor but forfeits millions of pre-IPO shares. According to Kara Swisher's sources, CEO Mark Pincus did not force the former Facebook and MySpacer to give back shares. He is walking away from 4.6 million (but still has more than 2 million vested). Van Natta will stay on the board of directors, but Brad Feld leaves... Rich Tong is out as fashion director of Tumblr. You kind of had to see this move coming after the whole Fashion Week kerfuffle... And there are changes at The Daily Meal, Fine Cooking and more...
