Death of Interactive Ads; ESPN Hires NBA Legend

February 24, 2012
Canoe Ventures shuts down its interactive TV advertising business, which will cost 120 employees their jobs. CEO Kathy Timko -- who signed on just six months ago -- is out with CTO Joel Hassell assuming her spot. The 30 remaining staffers will turn their attention to VOD ads. AdAge notes that this might signal the death of interactive ads. Canoe, which launched in 2008 with backing from Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications, Charter Communications, Cablevision Systems, and Bright House Networks, never gained the traction it needed due to industry infighting and technological issues. Ad buyers never really believed in the premise, either, and now their lack of faith is coming true...

The Los Angeles Times makes a host of moves, including snagging Chad Terhune as healthcare reporter. The paper elevates David Meeks to assistant online political editor and recalls John Glionna from Seoul... Elsewhere on the West Coast, Los Angeles poaches Nancy Miller and Elina Shatkin to be deputy editor and senior editor, respectively... Entertainment Weekly promotes Jeff Giles from executive editor to deputy managing editor... Taylor Paul jumps from associate editor to editor-in-chief of Surfing. Cowabunga, dude!...

Atlantic Media steals Zach Seward from The Wall Street Journal to be a senior editor on the soon-to-launch global business brand. He follows Kevin Delaney, who left WSJ in January... The Daily hires Lauren Schutte to work under Richard Johnson in the West Coast bureau. She had been a staff reporter at the Hollywood Reporter and previously served as Janice Min's assistant... Peter Goodman will remain executive business editor at the Huffington Post, but he will focus on reporting and writing. Executive news editor Neil Katz takes over the day-to-day operations... The Next Web grabs former New York Times developer Benjamin Jackson to cover gaming...

Google taps Dennis Woodside, currently president of the Americas operations, to be CEO of Motorola Mobility. He has a lot of work ahead of him to make the Internet giant and the cell phone maker come together with some semblance of reason... TechCrunch loses one of its most popular writers. Jason Kincaid has been with the site since 2008, and won't be choosing his next step until he has "redeemed the dancing classes I purchased on Google Offers."... Do not leak information to the press, especially if you work at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. A number of staffers were fired after Whitney Houston's death. The real question: Will anyone be cut for telling RadarOnline.com about the firings?... Kareem Abdul-Jabbar signs on to write a biweekly column with ESPN.com... And there are changes at ABC News, Martha Stewart Living, and more...
