Buzzfeed's Hiring Coup; More Turnover At AOL

And then Buzzfeed went and outdid itself. Again. Ben Smith taps Michael Hastings, the Rolling Stone contributing editor who brought down General Stanley McChrystal. He will cover President Obama's re-election campaign. While it sounds like a temporary appointment (is Buzzfeed's master plan to see how its editorial operations work through the election and then re-evaluate?), the hiring is the biggest coup yet for the site. Hastings has experience on the campaign trail, having spent 2008 following around then-Senator Obama. It's going to be very fun to see how this all plays out, and we wish Hastings and the rest of the crew all the success in the world...

AOL watches Alex Gounares leave. The CTO headed the entire tech side of the operation and was a key hire by Tim Armstrong. Tim Dierks, head of tech at the Huffington Post Media Group, also departs, replaced temporarily by SVP Michael Manos. There might be more departures coming, as February is bonus time at the company. Speaking of departures, TechCrunch loses Erick Schonfeld. Eric Eldon will replace him as editor of the AOL property that has undergone massive change since Michael Arrington departed. The original TC era was already over, but Schonfeld's departure slams the door closed for good...

Gannett names Mary Murcko president of sales. She had been executive vice president, group publisher, at Rodale... Melanie Bromley leaves Us Weekly, where she had been West Coast bureau chief, for a senior correspondent position at E! News...

CNBC hires Rick Beispel as head of the strategic ad sales unit. He had been at MTV Networks, where he was senior vice president of new business development, sales and marketing for the Nickelodeon Kids and Family Group... CNN moves Carol Costello to the mornings. She'll transfer to Atlanta and anchor CNN Newsroom... And there are changes at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, NBC News and more...
