Huffington Demoted And Promoted; Another Exit at Yahoo

April 6, 2012
Depending on who you ask, Arianna Huffington either scores a promotion at AOL or Lauren Kapp, the company's new chief PR person, successfully pulls one over on The New York Times and spins Huffington's demotion in a positive light. Either way, Ms. HuffPo will be doing something different at AOL, and it seems like she won't have quite as much control after losing oversight of TechCrunch, Engadget, AOL.com and other sites within the portfolio. Jay Kirsch will handle those duties now...

William K. Marimow rejoins the Philadelphia Inquirer as its lead editor. He served in the same role from 2006 and 2010. The New York Times's David Carr and Amy Chozick see the move as one that will reassure the Inky's downtrodden editorial staff of the new owner's pure intentions. Current editor-in-chief Stan Wischnowski moves to a "senior editorial role."... Richard Huff departs the New York Daily News where he was deputy features editor to oversee PR at CBS News shows including 48 Hours Mystery and CBS Sunday Morning. It's a smart move, getting out of the Daily News before the dirt really hits the fan...

Vanity Fair watches Vicki Ward jump to PR firm MWW Group. The contributor to Fox News and Fox Business was a contributing editor at the Conde Nast publication after stints at Talk and the New York Post... Human Events makes a few changes, cutting editor-at-large Jason Mattera. Conservative columnist David Harsanyi takes his place. Tony Lee and Brian Darling also recently left the publication... InStyle promotes editorial operations director Lavinel Savu to assistant managing editor... Ashley Spencer moves up from features editor to deputy editor at J-14... Bonnier appoints John Driscoll as vice president of corporate sales...

Yahoo loses a big player as chief product officer Blake Irving resigns. The move comes as a result of CEO Scott Thompson's decision to chop Irving's division through hundreds of layoffs. Irving was a key hire during the Carol Bartz days. Thompson clearly has other ideas about where he wants to take Yahoo, although the true nature of those plans are anyone's guess... Matt Lauer re-signs with the Today show, ending our long national nightmare. "Matt is the franchise, and our franchise player has decided to keep leading our team," Steve Capus, president of NBC News, said in an interview with The New York Times... And there are changes at CQ Roll Call, Texas Monthly and more...
