HuffPo Adds Two Execs; LA Times Frees Editor

The Huffington Post installs Janet Balis as publisher. She's the first person to take the position and had been senior vice president and head of sales strategy, marketing and partnerships at AOL proper. Moritz Loew comes onboard as senior vice president of sales for HuffPo, which is clearly looking to expand its revenue streams. Arianna Huffington believes the pair will be "invaluable members" of the team, but you have to wonder how the trio will get along since the move has Tim Armstrong's fingerprints all over it. The AOL head also made a number of changes to the rest of his sales staff. Best of luck to all...

The Houston Chronicle hires Los Angeles Times associate editor Randy Harvey as sports columnist. "I've been suppressing my inner Oscar Madison. After 12 years behind a desk in management, I'm letting him free," he wrote to LA Observed. Additionally, Chronicle online sports editor Nick Mathews takes over as full-fledged sports editor... Larry Platt lasts 16 months at the Philadelphia Daily News. He'll be replaced by Michael Days, who previously steered the ship. Platt will write a book on Jamie Moyer...

The New Orleans Times-Picayune will publish three days a week (along with Newhouse Newspapers' other properties in the South. The announcement prompts an outcry of support and its own Twitter feed. Layoffs loom... Arnaud de Borchgrave takes leave from the Washington Times. The columnist came under fire after some citing issues. Meanwhile, Erik Wemple, the blogger who went after de Borchgrave, is experiencing a river of hate. Oh, D.C... USA Today fires Tom Pedulla, a sportswriter with 31 years of experience, along with Michael McCarthy, Tom Weir and others...

Condé Nast relaunches M to take advantage of the growing men's market. Peter Kaplan, editorial director at Fairchild, will provide the vision while staffers from WWD and fill in the content... The Atlantic hires Hayley Romer as associate publisher. She'll report to Jay Lauf... Abigail Libers leaves Martha Stewart Living for a staff writer position at Shape...

HLN gives Ryan Smith a new show. Evening Express rifts off of Morning Express with Robin Meade but, you know, in the evening. Clark Howard, the personal finance guru, and Isha Sesay of CNN fame will help out... The HP team that developed webOS's HTML5-based application framework for Touchpad leaves for Google...
