A Murdoch Is Out; TV Sees Surge In Hiring

Elisabeth Murdoch is out as CEO of Shine, the company she started and then sold to dad Rupert Murdoch for an exorbitant amount of money. Alex Mahon takes over the position, while the young Murdoch will be only chairman of the production firm. The official spin from News Corp. is that she wanted to focus on the creative aspects of the business and leave the, well, business side to someone else. Unofficially, Wall Street wonders if she's going to earn a larger role in pop's company. Elisabeth has largely avoided getting tainted by the News of the World scandal and related PR disasters, so it might make sense to elevate the 43-year-old into a position of power. As always, Rupert knows best. Elsewhere at News Corp., the company kills Newscore, its "weird" internal newswire, eliminating 20 positions. The Daily, apparently, is also "on watch," its fate TBD after the November elections...

Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism taps Sreenath Sreenivasan as its first chief digital officer. He had been dean of student affairs. It's a smart move by the school as it seeks to further integrate the digital world into its curriculum... Gersh Kuntzman leaves The Fort Greene and Clinton Hill Locals for a job as deputy managing editor for news at the New York Daily News. Mitchell Trinka, a former intern at the sites and CUNY Graduate School of Journalism alumnus, will take his position... The Washington Examiner watches digital managing editor Tim Richardson leave just eight months into the job. He's going to the Washington Post as senior digital editor/producer...

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram lays off a dozen, including managing editor Lois Norder, as part of its ongoing effort to refocus on digital. Along those lines, Kathy Vetter, managing editor on the Web side, will control most of the newsroom... Carla Robbins says goodbye to The New York Times editorial page. She's going on book leave after five and a half years of being deputy page editor...

Tara Welty lands a new gig as editor-in-chief of Scholastic's Instructor. She had been editor of Scholastic Art... Malcolm Campbell joins amNewYork as senior director of advertising. From 2006 through 2011, he was publisher of Spin... Robin Sayers moves from Martha Stewart Living, where she was beauty and lifestyle director, to the executive editor spot at Martha Stewart Weddings... Some good news: TV news is staffing up more than in previous years... And there are changes at MTV, the NBC and more...
