Yahoo! Fills CEO Spot; NYT Names Public Editor

July 17, 2012
Yahoo! shocks the tech community, poaching Marissa Mayer from Google to be CEO. The 37-year-old executive was one of the top people at the search giant, although her role had been minimized since the return of Larry Page. "She was pretty much voted off the island, even though she was critical to its earliest successes," an anonymous source tells Kara Swisher, who thinks Yahoo!'s choice has Daniel Loeb's fingerprints all over it. Mayer starts today after quitting Google, where she was employee No. 20, yesterday. She is also pregnant, due to have a boy in October with husband Zachary Bogue. There's no word on the future of interim CEO Ross Levinsohn, who many thought was going to get the job, but it almost certainly does not involve Yahoo!...

The cards are starting to fall at Sports Illustrated. Or, rather, the writers are leaving the bullpen. Damon Hack departs for The Golf Channel, where he will serve as an on-air talent as well as a writer. Meanwhile, Gabriele Marcotti who wrote for SI.com (as well as many other outlets), moves to ESPN's new soccer center, ESPNFC. Interestingly, both men left for publications that have a television arm. You wonder if others SIers will follow suit. Perhaps the magazine's soccer scribe, Grant Wahl, who wished Hack well and recently appeared on Fox Soccer Channel during the Euro 2012 broadcasts?...

Founder Marc Smirnoff leaves his post as managing editor of The Oxford American along with managing editor Carol Ann Fitzgerald. Publisher Warwick Sabin takes over as interim editor, a few days after locking the staff out of the office due to a personnel investigation. There's more to this story, clearly...The New York Times picks Margaret Sullivan as public editor. She had been editor and vice president of The Buffalo News, where she started in 1980. Sullivan is the first woman to hold the position and will replace Arthur Brisbane -- who offered "a nice blueprint of how not to go about" the position -- in September. In addition to a column in the print paper, she will be on social media, have a blog and a Web page. Excitement overload...

The Los Angeles Daily Journal, which previously canned its copy editors, fires staff photographers Todd Rogers and Robert Levins. The paper will rely upon freelancers and reporters for its image needs. Management did, however, buy a bunch of cameras... And there are changes at AOL, the Washington Post and more...
