Background: Modern Luxury -- one of the largest publishers, if not the largest publisher -- of city magazines in the country, acquired Scottsdale magazine in 2009, and then relaunched it in November 2013. Founded in 1976, the mag experienced a "complete rebirth," says editor-in-chief Marie Look. "We have an incredible art director [Scott Glick] on board, and we have people that just really specialize in creating very powerful visuals. So the photography is excellent."

And whereas the previous publication was more aspirational, explains Look, the new iteration caters directly to the city's affluent residents, whose interests include local design, dining, entertainment, real estate and shopping. "Our target readership is probably around [age] 40," says Look. "They have an average net worth of upwards of $2.7 million."

Look says the editorial mission is "to give readers the scoop on the whole luxury lifestyle, before maybe the information is out there. And then if there is something that’s public knowledge that people are already in anticipation of, we want to make sure that we give them additional information on it… maybe some exclusive access, take them behind the scenes, share it with them from a different angle."
