There's chaos at Yahoo. First, we heard that COO Henrique De Castro, the first man Marissa Mayer hired, was out. Kara Swisher reports that many people within the company had been referring to him as a "dead man walking" for weeks, if not months. He was a $109 million mistake. Oops. Then, we got word that editor-in-chief Jai Singh -- notably not a Mayer hire -- was leaving as well. He had been managing editor of the Huffington Post and previously ran CNET Networks. There's no official reason for his departure but Mayer has been active in the company's content-production space and CMO Kathy Savitt is now handling the media unit. Swisher again: "Savitt has a very mixed reputation -- and this is me being polite -- inside Yahoo."...

The New York Times recruits Farhad Manjoo from The Wall Street Journal. He'll write the State of the Art column, replacing David Pogue who jumped to Yahoo in November. Manjoo, previously at Slate, lasted just four months at the WSJ before splitting for the Times. Meanwhile, the Times Magazine replaces Matt Bai (also to Yahoo) with Jim Rutenberg. He was, notably, the paper's first Hamptons correspondent among many other gigs... The Orange County Register, which had been on a hiring spree, will lay off around 35 people. That group includes editor Ken Brusic and "most other top editorial managers." The Riverside Press-Enterprise, another publication owned by Aaron Kushner, loses 39 staffers...

Sports Illustrated recruits Brendan Ripp, Fortune's VP of sales and marketing, as its new publisher. He replaces Frank Wall. Ripp, a 14-year Time Inc. veteran, is the son of CEO Joe Ripp, but this isn't about nepotism. "Brendan has a long and accomplished history with the News & Sports Group, where he has held a number of leadership positions at each of our brands over the past 14 years," Todd Larsen, Time Inc.’s executive VP/group president News and Sports, wrote in a memo to staffers that didn't mention Ripp's connection to the top of the masthead. Elsewhere at Time Inc., Colin Bodell is the new chief technology officer and executive vice president while CIO Mitch Klaif jumps to senior vice president... Jonathan Allen leaves Politico for Bloomberg News. He'll cover the White House and Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential bid, if she makes one, of course... CNN promotes Joe Johns to senior Washington correspondent. He's been with the network for 10 years...

The Daily Beast re-arms, hiring Noah Shachtman as executive editor. He co-founded Wired's Danger Room blog and had been editing Foreign Policy for a short time. Additionally, John Avlon is the new editor-in-chief at Tina Brown's old stomping ground... Say Media lands Joyce Bautista Ferrari as editorial director. She had been director of editorial development at Conde Nast Traveler... Pulitzer Prize administrator Sig Gissler will retire this summer... And there are changes at The Week Inc., Viacom Media Networks and more...
