Major Layoffs at CNN; Ezra Klein's New Hires

January 24, 2014
Ezra Klein's new venture grabs another big name, recruiting Matt Yglesias from Slate. The Moneybox blogger joins Klein, Melissa Bell and Dylan Matthews. Slate's editor-in-chief David Plotz had the best line, quipping that “you may recall that our last Moneybox columnist, Annie Lowrey, left Slate to go off and marry Ezra Klein. Well, it’s happening again.” (Klein and Lowrey were married in 2011.) No one has any idea what the new venture will look like, but the talent is impressive...

Tony Gallagher is out as editor at The Daily Telegraph. Chris Evans, the assistant news editor, will oversee the weekday print editions with Sunday Telegraph editor Ian MacGregor, adding Saturday duties to his job description. Gallagher's ouster came as a shock to the newsroom, where he was loved... Reuters is in hiring mode and will add 50 people in 2014. That's a turnaround from 2013, which saw five percent of the news agency depart. Dow Jones cuts CEO Lex Fenwick. Chief creative officer William Lewis replaces him on an interim basis...

CNN lays off 40 staffers – including "a pregnant producer who was two weeks away from giving birth to twins" – but there won't be a reduction in headcount in most of the affected cites, which include Los Angeles, Atlanta and Washington D.C. The network did hire Sally Kohn as a contributor. She left Fox News, where she had been the token liberal, in October... Time adds four staffers including Nikhil Kumar (senior editor of Time International) and Dan Stewart, who will be deputy editor of the continuous news desk... Popular Mechanics promotes Andrew Del-Colle to senior editor. He had been associate editor...

Ex-AOL.com editor-in-chief Cyndi Stivers joins forces with Tina Brown. She will lead digital strategy as Tina Brown Live Media ramps up for the Women in the World Summit in April... Piper Jaffray parachutes in to attempt to save SpinMedia. Good luck. The company has had three CEOs in less than a year and is hemorrhaging money... Tivo lays off at least five staffers, which is most of its hardware team. The company is transitioning to the cloud and will only use third-party hardware designers in the future... Luke Beatty scores a promotion to head of product for AOL Brand Group. The Associated Content founder was Tim Armstrong's college roommate... And there are changes at Ketchum, Bloomberg  and more...
