New Hires at The New Republic; Matt Taibbi Leaves Rolling Stone

February 21, 2014
Rolling Stone loses Matt Taibbi. The reporter/muckraker/righteously angry chronicler of our time is off to join Glenn Greenwald at First Look Media. He says goodbye to RS in a touching post. Our favorite part: “It was my first real job and it changed my life. Had Rolling Stone not given me a chance that year, God knows where I’d be – one of the ideas I was considering most seriously at the time was going to Ukraine to enroll in medical school, of all things.” We’re all much better off that he didn’t. Taibbi says more information about his new gig will be forthcoming shortly. For now, best of luck...

The New Republic adds Rebecca Traister as a senior editor. She’ll write a weekly column for the website and produce print features as well. Evgeny Morozov, the Internet expert who had been a contributing editor, also moves into a senior editor position. He’ll also work both online and in print. Jason Zengerle is returning to TNR, where he once worked for 12 years. He will serve as a senior editor. TNR also adds Erik Carlson and Diana Ryan as director of integrated advertising and integrated marketing manager, respectively... Hearst Magazines International names Gary Ellis chief digital officer. He had been VP of international digital media at Viacom Media Networks...

Katie Zezima moves to the Washington Post to anchor the paper’s online political coverage during the day. She had been on the Chris Christie beat at the Associated Press. WaPo also promotes Alison Coglianese to Reader Representative. She succeeds Doug Feaver and had been deputy Reader Representative. And Emily Badger and Jason Millman start the re-staff of Wonkblog... The Washington Times recruits Cliff May as a weekly columnist. He’ll write the “Foreign Desk” column, “culling his vast experience to produce sharp insights into the globe’s most pressing issues of the day.”... Politico hires the National Journal's Steve Shepard for the new Campaign Pro vertical... Andrew Tangel replaces Ted Mann on The Wall Street Journal's transportation beat. He’ll have a big act to follow, as Mann was the one who drove (ha!) the Bridgegate scandal from the beginning... Boston Globe editorial board member Kathleen Kingsbury takes over the Sunday op-ed editor role...

Time Out New York loses senior associate fashion editor Cristina Velocci and shopping and style editor Rachel LeWinter. They jump to Stylebistro and US Weekly, respectively... People snags Entertainment Weekly senior editor Bronwyn Barnes as its new senior style editor... Katie J.M. Baker moves to BuzzFeed, where she’ll cover criminal justice and legal/social issues in higher education. She had been a reporter at Newsweek... And there are changes at Telemundo, Hearst Television and more
