Jack Griffin will take over as CEO of Tribune Publishing, which consists of eight newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune. LAT publisher Eddy Hartenstein will become chairman of Tribune Publishing. Griffin, a longtime media executive, had been consulting with the Tribune Company. Before that, he served as CEO of Time Inc., a job he lost in 2011 after just six months at the helm, at least in part because of his "brusque style." If Griffin can turn around ailing Tribune Publishing, it will be the biggest victory of his long career that included a successful stint at the top of Meredith Corporation...
Disney Interactive lays off
700 employees, roughly 25 percent of the workforce. The move is more of a retrenching than anything, according
to the spin from division president James Pitaro
. "We’re not exiting any businesses, and we will pursue licensing partnerships in which we retain a lot of creative input," he said. "But this is a doubling down on mobile and an effort to focus much more intently on a core set of priorities." As a result, the company will cease
creating console games in house; instead, farming them out to outside developers... Forty-two layoffs also hit
the sales team at Machinima, YouTube's global video entertainment network...
Ezra Klein, who promised not to make his new Vox Media venture look like Wonkblog, poaches Yuri Victor from the Washington Post. He is a designer and developer, and becomes the ninth Post staffer to join the Project X team... Meanwhile, WaPo relaunches FW: Fashion Washington as a monthly magazine. Former staff writer Janet Kelly and lifestyle editor Nancy McKeon are in charge... Data journalism is all the rage these days, so it's no surprise that BuzzFeed, which is also all the rage, hires Jeremy Singer-Vine as data editor. He comes from The Wall Street Journal, where he had been data reporter and programmer. Kids, if you want a job in journalism, learn how to deal with numbers and code... Yahoo recruits another big name, with Lisa Belkin leaving the Huffington Post... Mashable hires Josh Dickey as entertainment editor and brings on Jessica Plautz as travel editor...
The Guardian will move Janine Gibson back to London. She had been editor-in-chief of the United States operations. Katharine Viner, head of Australia, replaces Gibson with Emily Wilson taking over for her. Additionally, Gibson's deputy Stuart Millar returns to England... National Journal hires Amanda Cormier as managing editor, and adds Jason Plautz as energy reporter and Emma Roller to the wire team... The Washington Times recruits Christine O'Donnell as a columnist. She previously ran for Delaware Senate as a member of the Tea Party...
Larry Kudlow's "The Kudlow Report" on CNBC will end its run this month, but Kudlow will stay on as senior contributor at the network. Liz Wahl quits her job at Russia Today, the Kremlin-backed network, live on air. "I cannot be part of a network funded by the Russian government that white-washes the actions of Putin," she said -- and might consider a job at either CNN or MSNBC... Bill Whitaker lands a job with 60 Minutes. The new correspondent has been with CBS News for three decades... And there are changes at Nielsen, Fortune and more...
