Major Changes at Lucky; Maureen Dowd Joins NY Times Mag

August 12, 2014
The New York Times Magazine recruits Maureen Dowd as a staff writer. She joined the paper in 1983 and will continue writing for the op-ed section. "Maureen is one of The Times’ signature writers. Period," new editor Jake Silverstein said in a statement. "And as we work toward a redesign that will put new emphasis on stylish, longform narratives, she’ll be a brilliant addition to our team. While I can’t disclose any specific assignments yet, I can reveal that Maureen's subject matter for the magazine will range far afield from her current bailiwick of politics, foreign affairs and edible marijuana." The publication is also planning a redesign for early 2015 and should add a host of new staffers as well...

Paula Faris steps into the role of weekend co-anchor on Good Morning America. The former ABC News correspondent, who also filled in as co-anchor at World News Now, replaces Bianna Golodryga, who is off to Yahoo News... ESPN suspends Max Kellerman for comments he made about the Ray Rice situation... Fox News hands Cherie Grzech a promotion to senior director of the network's Washington bureau and the politics team... Claudia Milne will run Bloomberg's U.S. live television coverage after 20 years at the BBC. Her father was a producer for 60 Minutes...

Condé Nast makes a major move with Lucky, spinning it off into something called The Lucky Group, which is a joint venture with e-commerce platform BeachMint. Josh Berman, the head of the latter company, will be CEO of the new entity. For now, the magazine’s staffers are staying put. Additionally, Epicurious and Bon Appetit join sales forces, with Epicurious vice president and general manager Carolyn Kremins out in the shuffle. And Details gets a new publisher in the form of Drew Schutte, who previously held the same positions at Wired and The New Yorker... New York hires Cara Katz as advertising director. She moves from American Express Publishing, but started her career at her new home as an account executive and sales assistant...

The new luxury vertical from the good people at Bloomberg Pursuits adds four staffers, poaching Esquire senior fashion market editor Nic Screws and Tasting Table's Tejal Rao, who will be food editor and restaurant critic. Additionally, Justin Ocean leaves Yahoo Travel to be deputy editor, with Stephen Pulvirent stepping in as associate editor... Business Insider continues to expand its U.K. shop, hiring Michael Bird as markets and finance reporter, James Cook as tech reporter and Tomas Hirst as politics reporter. They come from City A.M., The Daily Dot and the World Economic Forum, respectively... Style.com adds Nylon market director Rachael Wang. She'll be fashion market director...
