Background: There are two types of men: those who need their girlfriends to pick out their clothes and those who pick out clothes for their girlfriends. Details, the magazine for the unapologetically style-savvy man, is most certainly for the latter. "Details is definitely, by and large, a very fashion-forward men's magazine," says Candice Rainey, the magazine's deputy editor. "We're not fashion for the masses; it's definitely tailored to a guy who knows and embraces fashion, and is comfortable with it."

But Details isn't all skinny jeans and tailored suits. From the hottest fitness trends to the best men's skincare lines and "it" tech gadgets, the magazine is the curator of all things cool. And unlike readers of other men's mags, the Details dude happily embraces his stylish side. "He's not embarrassed about using exfoliator or [saying that] he stole it from his girlfriend; that's not our reader," says Rainey. "Details is really for the guy who has a very solid, developed sense of style, and he adheres to evolved ideals of masculinity. What's core to our brand is he always wants to know what's next."

The interests and tastes of the typical Details reader (a "young, successful, urban-dwelling man") are central to the magazine's editorial mission, and though Details has been primarily service-oriented in the past, editors have recently begun adding more voice to the magazine through the addition of cultural essays through all sections of the front-of-book. These totally pitchable first-person pieces are rooted in cultural commentary, says Rainey, but are still "viewed through the lens of Details."
