How To Pitch: Family Circle
This women's service mag seeks pitches that speak to moms of tweens and teens.- November 10, 2015
Circulation: 4 million
Frequency: 12 times a year
Special issues: The magazine runs themed issues: Wellness (March), Grilling/Summer Entertaining (July), Back to School (September), Halloween (October) and Holiday (December)
Background: Family Circle was launched in 1932 as a women's magazine distributed in supermarkets. In later years, it was purchased by Minneapolis-based Cowles Media Company, The New York Times Company, Gruner + Jahr and, finally, Meredith Corporation in 2005. Throughout its many incarnations, the magazine has stayed true to its mom-centric mission.
"We consider ourselves the leading resource for moms of tweens and teens," said executive editor Darcy Jacobs. "We offer actionable advice, realistic solutions and inspiring stories. We try to address the challenges, as well as celebrate the good times. So what's driving us is we don't want to just help our readers be better parents, we want to help them be a smarter parent too."
This focus on the parenting of tweens and teens is what differentiates Family Circle from other women's service books, such as Good Housekeeping. "Everything we do is through that lens," said Jacobs. "So we have dinnertime recipes, fitness regimens, tech tips, all the parenting advice. It's really important to us that we reflect what our readers want to know, what's in our readers' minds, and we do that in a very encouraging, inclusive voice. We really feel no other magazine dedicates itself to this particular life stage."
