How To Pitch: 5280

This 'mile-high' mag seeks spirited lifestyle coverage and invests in quality, long-form features

- January 24, 2013
Circulation: 85,000 total distribution; 73,615 audited
Frequency: Monthly
Special issues: "Dining in Denver" (October), "Top of the Town" (July), "Top Doctors" (August)

Background: Founded in 1993, the Denver lifestyle magazine 5280 has risen in the ranks to become the acclaimed regional book it is today. 5280 -- the name refers to Denver's mile-high elevation -- celebrates life in the city and beyond. Its content extends to greater Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs and the Rocky mountains -- "our backyard," said editorial director Geoff Van Dyke. Everything is addressed in the "big, meaty issues," from restaurants to interior design to in-depth profiles and investigative pieces.

This past year, 5280 was named a finalist twice by the American Society of Magazine Editors: in the public interest category, for Natasha Gardner's "Direct Fail" and in the digital video category, for Jefferson Panis' "The Saddlemaker." Combine the ASME nominations with the mag's previous general excellence nod from the City and Regional Magazine Association, and Van Dyke says that 5280 is "definitely the whole package now." 5280 counts the Denver Post, Westword and Colorado Homes and Lifestyles as competitors, but distinguishes itself by offering artful long-form journalism in addition to its bread-and-butter service content. Van Dyke attributes 5280's success to editor and publisher, Daniel Brogan who, he says, has "invested in a solid staff and is willing to invest the time, money and space to deliver quality journalism."
