Special issues: The magazine runs themed issues; editorial calendar available by request.
Background: Founded in 1922 by Edwin Meredith, Better Homes and Gardens has been providing readers with advice on -- you guessed it -- homes and gardens for almost a century. According to the mag's mission statement, each issue aims to "bridge the gap between dreaming and doing" when it comes to everything from decorating and gardening to personal and family well-being. It's also the fourth most circulated magazine in the country, with a whopping 7.6 million-plus subscribers.
While the mag counts Real Simple, Martha Stewart Living and House Beautiful among its competition, it differentiates itself by "keeping things actionable," said Kelly Kegans, senior deputy home editor. The information is still "inspirational but… budget-friendly and realistic."
Throughout the pub's many years of offering advice, it's gone through several editorial updates. Recently the mag revamped its front-of-the-book, so there are plenty of opportunities for freelancers to break in.
