How bad is the magazine business at the moment? Consider these three things: ad pages are down year-over-year, even in the back-breaking September issues that the glossies have to rely on; newsstand sales fell 6.3 percent industry-wide in the first half of this year, with even steeper declines at the celebrity weeklies, while subscription sales were essentially flat; total paid circulation was actually up in the first half, because publishers poured on the public-place copies, i.e. the freebies most commonly seen in your dentist's waiting room.
