Launched in 1980 by Time Inc. as a result of then-Time editor Leon Jaroff's response to readers' increasing interest in science content, Discover was designed to be a cross between scholarly Scientific American and easy-to-digest Popular Science. After being sold to Family Media, Disney Publishing and Discover Media, respectively, the magazine was acquired in 2010 by Kalmbach Publishing Co., based in Waukesha, Wisconsin.
Senior editor Becky Lang described the freelancer-friendly magazine as one that combines narrative feature stories with cutting-edge research. "We're looking to uncover the gems of research in terms of how the science unfolded, and what else is on the cusp of discovery." According to Discover's mission statement, the magazine sets out to provide content that informs, inspires and entertains people who love science....
