More Turnover at Tribune Co.; Politico Pro Unveiled

November 16, 2010
Tina Brown killed Newsweek.com before deciding she totally wasn't going to do any such thing. That doesn't mean, however, that the site's staff is safe. At some point soon, the redundancy of their jobs will become apparent and firings will commence. The two publications are on target to lose almost $40 million this year, and savings have to start somewhere...

Sam Zell will leave the Tribune Company he destroyed. The chairman will step down after bankruptcy proceedings run their course. No surprise here, but who's going to assume the top spot? The Wall Street Journal hears Michael Eisner and Peter Chernin, but both would be nuts to waltz into that embittered battleground... The New York Times merges its print and online operations, moving digital news editor Jim Roberts to assistant managing editor for news and Web newsroom editor Fiona Spruill to editor for emerging platforms... Jann Wenner strikes again, firing Men's Journal editor Brad Wieners... Jane Pratt teams up with a 14-year-old to launch a magazine. If you want to be an unpaid contributor, feel free to send samples to the teenager...

CBS decides to give ESPN's Colin Cowherd his own sitcom. At least one person (and probably many more) believe this is a terrible idea... Former TVNewser editor and current Mediaite senior editor Steve Krakauer departs for a job as digital producer on Piers Morgan's new show. Mark Joyella fills Krakauer's spot, but you have to wonder if there's something wrong with the Dan Abrams vehicle. Staffers are fleeing, as Glynnis MacNicol recently announced she was leaving for Business Insider as well...

"Content machine" Yahoo hires Will Leitch -- a quality content machine in his own right -- to review movies. The Deadspin founder will continue covering sports for New York magazine... Politico unveils its plans for Politico Pro. The site will debut in February with over 40 journalists dedicated to sniffing out news. Current Politico deputy managing editor Tim Grieve will helm the venture as editor-in-chief, with Dan Berman, Darren Samuelsohn, Josh Voorhees, and a host of other name brands already signed on... McDonald's hires Cheryll Forsatz as director of PR for the New York region... Jay Leveton joins Burson-Marsteller as worldwide EVP. He comes from Proof Integrated Communications where he was CEO... And there are changes at Hollywood Reporter, PCMag, and more...
