Background: Curve has bested the gauntlet of challenges for print publications to remain the country's premier lesbian lifestyle magazine. Originally launched as the brainchild of media veteran Frances Stevens -- who in October 2010 sold the magazine to Australian publishing company Avalon Media -- the glossy has grown under the direction of its current editor in chief, Merryn Johns. She and her small staff continue to explore new ways to speak to Curve's audience.
"Our readership is and will continue to be aimed fairly and squarely at lesbians and women and men with a connection to the lesbian community," explained Johns. The mission, she said, "is to bring the best of news, interviews and all kinds of lifestyle elements to lesbian readers in each issue. We have a commitment to news and politics, but we also have a commitment to pop culture, fashion and travel."
And if you're a writer in this demographic, your pitches are especially welcome. "We have to say 'Lesbian writers and lesbian subjects to the front of the queue,' not because we're discriminatory but because we have 84 pages every month and we have an obligation to fulfill the latest and greatest in lesbian culture," said Johns.
