More Churn at Newsweek/Daily Beast; The Times Staffs Up

August 19, 2011
Tina Brown's turnover continues. The latest: Louise Roug and Lee Aitken leave Newsweek/The Daily Beast soon after Randall Lane, Jeff Barish and Andrew Bast walked out the door. In their place, Brown brings in Kyle Pope and Justine Rosenthal. Additionally, Malcolm Jones, Mike Giglio and Zachary Karabell get new beats and/or promotions. The former Vanity Fair editor also lures New York Daily News columnist Michael Daly. The money is there; the question is how long can Newsweek sustain the churn?...

Hugo Lindgren staffs up The New York Times Magazine. Jon Kelly, who Lindgren hired away from Vanity Fair when he was at Bloomberg Businessweek, joins as senior editor for the reworked front-of-book section. Greg Veis, The New Republic import, moves to politics editor. Samantha Henig leaves The New Yorker to head up the NYT Mag's website, which needs to differentiate itself from the rest of the paper's site...

AdAge loses Edmund Lee to Bloomberg News. Lee joined the publication just 17 months ago after a long freelancing career, a stint at the Village Voice, and three years at WWD... The New York Press closes down after much speculation. It will live on, sort of, as the arts section of Our Town Downtown... Entertainment Weekly grabs Stephan Lee from O: The Oprah Magazine. He'll be an editorial assistant...

VanityFair.com gets a new editor a few weeks after it got an upgrade. Chris Rovzar of NYMag.com fame joins as digital editor. Michael Hogan left in June for the Huffington Post. Rovzar will report to Vanity Fair's executive director of multimedia projects Jamie Pallot... Salon recruits Jefferson Morley as Washington editor. He spent the last two years writing a book but previously worked at the Washington Post... Soraya Darabi leaves the day-to-day operations of Foodspotting in order to focus on getting more work with ABC...

Capital New York raises $1.7 million to hire more staff. New York Observer politics guru Azi Paybarah and Yahoo's Joe Pompeo come onboard as do Reid Pillifant and Dana Rubinstein. It's NYO-lite up in here... Louis Gray joins Google. The tech blogger will serve as Google+'s evangelist... Steve Doppelt leaves Merkley + Partners for Euro RSCG's New York office. He'll join up on the Dos Equis account... And there are changes at 5W Public Relations, Univision News and more...
