Buzzfeed's Political Move; Duffy's Time

December 13, 2011
In a surprise move that signals the growing power of social media on the journalism landscape, Buzzfeed poaches Ben Smith (and his 59,000+ Twitter followers) as editor-in-chief. (The site welcomed him with a meme. Of course, it did.) He will hire at least a dozen reporters in addition to Whitney Jefferson and Matt Cherette who were stolen from Gawker Media last week. While the venue is different, the theory remains the same: reporting leads to scoops leads to traffic leads to advertising sales. Buzzfeed, in essence, hopes their new editorial lead can create more buzz. Smith will continue to pen a weekly politics column for Politico. Dylan Byers, who recently moved from AdWeek, takes over Smith's blog...

Michael Duffy scores a new job title at Time. The magazine's Washington bureau chief is the new executive editor of the entire magazine. He will stay in the nation's capital. In a loving note announcing the hire, Time's managing editor Rick Stengel wrote: "It's hard to describe what Michael Duffy does at TIME because he does so much and he does it so discreetly. He presides over Washington and our political coverage -- and there's no one better at that than he -- but he also plants the seed for cover stories on everything from Hell to yoga. (Plus, he has the knack of making you think it was your idea.)"... The Tampa Tribune lays off 165 staffers. Among the cut: TV critic and 35-year veteran Walt Belcher, the man with "more bylines than anybody in the history of the paper."... The Jewish Daily Forward grabs Kim Rosenberg Amzallag, formerly Mishpacha's director of corporate accounts, as director of advertising. It's the publication's third hire in the past two weeks...

Current TV's The War Room With Jennifer Granholm signs up Bloomberg TV senior news director Mark Berniker as executive producer... Geraldo Rivera lands a gig as a radio talk show host on New York's WABC. Weekdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. if you're interested...

AOL hires John Reid-Dodick from Thomson Reuters as head of human resources. He previously served at Sullivan & Cromwell LLP. Meanwhile, the Internet company loses PR vice president Kiersten Hollars, who joins Andreessen Horowitz as a partner... And there are changes at Little, Brown Children's, Los Angeles Times and more...
