Buyouts at the Grey Lady; New EIC at Rachael Ray

December 20, 2011
The New York Times loses more than 250 years of total experience through buyouts. Among those gone: 34-year vet Clyde Haberman, T Magazine executive editor Andy Port (20 years) and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Sam Dillon (20 years). George Vecsey also announced that he would be stepping back from his "Sports of the Times" column. The Observer chronicled all the departures best, scoring the touching departure memos. One of our favorites is culture editor Jon Landman's on culture writer Andrea Stevens, which includes the following sentence: "I'll look up and she won't be there. I'll feel the emptiness. I know I won’t be alone." Indeed he won't. Best of luck to all those moving on. You'll be missed...

Rodale lands Anthony Astarita as senior vice president and general manager of digital and brand development. He had been VP and GM of e-commerce and digital products at Barnes & Noble. Astaria will be tasked with building out his new company's tablet efforts... EveryDay with Rachael Ray hires Lauren Purcell as editor-in-chief. She had been executive editor at Self and starts on January 9... Politico scores another coup, snagging the Washington Post's deputy political editor Rachel Van Dongen for its campaign coverage. Additionally, Rachel Smolkin gets bumped up from White House bureau chief to White House editor, Bill Hamilton is the deputy managing editor of the enterprise efforts, and Edward-Isaac Dovere moves from deputy politics editor to deputy White House editor...

Thomas Rutledge, former COO of Cablevision Systems, is the new president and CEO of Charter Communications. The former top man at Time Warner Cable replaces Michael Lovett, who decided to leave in October... Javier Morgado steps in as senior broadcast producer at CNN's new four-hour morning show. He had been vice president of business development at Latina but spent 10 years under the NBC umbrella before jumping to print... Here's a new one: Kirk Wilson leaves his current gig to join Harrisburg's WHP as a reporter. That current job? Mayor of Carlisle, Pa., a gig he's held for 26 years... And there are changes at Philadelphia's WTXF, Hill + Knowlton Strategies, and more...
