Revolving Door Newsletter: 12.30.11

A Daily Without A Publisher; Yahoo News Taps The Eye

December 30, 2011
Well, that's it for another year at the Revolving Door. We saw plenty of movement, a good sign that the industry is recovering a bit. It's not the heady days of yesteryear when editors and writers were jumping from gig to gig, bouncing up the corporate ladder in search of the executive town car. But we saw a lot of movement, especially in the world of political coverage (Buzzfeed?!?). With the election ramping up, we expect to see more of the same in January and beyond. Elsewhere, we'll keep an eye on whether the impending ad slowdown (it's coming, trust us, although it won't be as bad as 2009) keeps staffers locked in their jobs. And then there's always the move to digital. How that affects the future is anyone's guess. Have a happy New Year, everyone, and we'll see you on the flip side...

AM New York is out a publisher as Paul Turcotte says he will leave December 31. The free daily is also without a top editor as Diane Goldie returned to Newsday's corporate headquarters after multiple clashes with Turcotte. You have to imagine there is more coming before it's all played out... Looks like George Stephanopoulos isn't the only one returning to This Week. The Sunday public affairs show is also getting a new executive producer in former World News EP Jon Banner. Banner led the Week for a year back in 2002... Yahoo News taps Steve Chaggaris from CBS News as executive producer, elections. He'll report to Washington bureau chief David Chalian. Prepare to be completely overwhelmed with political coverage in the coming year. And you thought 2008 was bad... Street Chopper editor Jeff G. Holt will also serve as EIC at Baggers... Blip TV raises $6 million but loses co-founders Dina Kaplan and Mike Hudack. Steve Brookstein is the acting CEO... And there are changes at GQ, Los Angeles Times and more...
