CNN Cuts Dozens; Village Voice Adds An Architect

CNN cuts dozens of employees in its two documentary units as it moves to a model that focuses on acquiring the features as well as producing them. Only one team will make them now, with the other doing investigative reporting on weekdays. CNN's executives are framing it as an ambitious attempt to widen their reach, writing in a statement, "By working with leading documentarians throughout the world, we will be able to expand the scope of documentaries on CNN and create an even greater impact." CNN will continue to produce In America in-house. In November, the 24-hour news network fired another few dozen employees company-wide...

The Associated Press names Gary Pruitt its new president and CEO, replacing Tom Curley. He had been in the same position at McClatchy Company. Pat Talamantes takes over as CEO at Pruitt's old company and Kevin McClatchy assumes the role of chairman of the board... The Denver Post lays off columnists Penny Parker and Mike Littwin. Penny was shocked by the news but admitted she was "extraneous." The Post also said goodbye to Dacia Johnson and moved around a few other staffers... The Onion loses the majority of its editorial staff, as 11 of the 16 full-time members refuse to move to Chicago. Some will stay on in a freelance capacity, but it won't be the same paper...

Village Voice Media takes a step into the social space, snagging Kevin Spidel for the dramatically named position of community architect. He previously served as director of product and marketing at Gannett... Everyday Food recruits Jolene Bouchon from Delish.com to be deputy digital director. She had been senior Web editor... Bloomberg TV says goodbye to 30 staffers but creates a 13-person digital video desk. The move has new boss Andrew Morse's fingers all over it. He previously worked as head of ABC News digital... Erin Medley moves to VH1.com as senior producer, music and events. She had been senior manager, programming and editorial content, at Clear Channel Media and Entertainment...

AOL goes through two rounds of layoffs in a week. Tim Armstrong and his cohort seem to be picking and choosing from different sites so as not to trigger the WARN Act that requires notification if there are more than 100 layoffs at any one location... Pinterest hires Tim Kendall, the man who helped Facebook figure out how to monetize itself. Twitter and Zynga previously tried to recruit the advertising expert... And there are changes at W, Everyday Food and more...
