Good Sheds Its Staff; Republic Gets Big Names

June 5, 2012
Good's owners decide they don't want to be a magazine anymore, laying off almost the entire editorial staff. Gone are executive editor Ann Friedman, managing editor Megan Greenwell, senior editor Cord Jefferson and a few others. The announcement comes a day after the staff threw a launch party for their latest issue, and then someone posted a video of the now canned staffers thanking the mag's 200,000 Facebook fans. Classy. No one really seems to have any answers about the curious timing of the entire ordeal (although something about a relaunched website), but a lot of good editors and writers just lost their jobs. Someone hire them, won't you?...

Chris Hughes was serious about that whole "The New Republic hiring big names" thing. The latest: Walter Kirn, who joins as national correspondent just four months after signing on as a GQ columnist. It's another move in TNR's "New Yorkerfication." Other names on new editor Franklin Foer's "want list" include Dexter Filkins, Mark Leibovich and Robert Draper... Jeffrey Slonim signs on as a contributing editor-at-large at Architectural Digest. He had been contributing editor at Interview... Alex Halperin joins Salon as cover editor, coming over from Gerson Lehrman Group... Amanda Wills leaves About.com for Mashable...

The New York Times loses Peter Sigal, deputy editor of the Sunday real estate section, to the International Herald Tribune. Vivian Toy replaces him. Elsewhere, the NYT's social media group bolsters its ranks with Michael Roston and Daniel Victor... Steve Proctor trades the San Francisco Chronicle for the Houston version of Hearst's newspaper arm. Proctor guided the Bay Area paper through a number of cuts during his three years in the ME spot... Reuters recruits Paul Lienert as Detroit bureau chief. He replaces Kevin Krolicki, who left some time ago...

Sue Simmons' last day will come on June 15. The four-time Emmy winner was not offered a new contract by WNBC/Channel 4... Herman Cain lands a national radio show. Sure, why not? It sure beats being president... Lot18 loses at least 10 people. Seven departed voluntarily, taking one month's pay along with them, while an unnamed vice president of strategy was fired. The cuts come as the company, which raised nearly $50 million, shuts down its Gourmet and Experiences verticals. Too much, too soon... And there are changes at The New Yorker, Rodale Books and more...
