Hundreds Cut in the South; CNN Cancels John King

June 15, 2012
Advance Publications lays off 600 as it transitions its newspapers in New Orleans and Alabama to digital-first properties. The Times-Picayune cuts more than 200, including almost half of the editorial staff. Restaurant critic Brett Anderson, sports columnist Peter Finney, religion writer Bruce Nolan and managing editors Peter Kovacs and Dan Shea are among those who lose their jobs. More than 400 employees in Alabama will also be out of work come September 30. The Birmingham News sees 60 percent of its editorial staff laid off. We knew this day was coming, but it doesn't make it any easier to report. Best of luck to all the good folks seeking new employment...

Elsewhere in the newspaper world, the Detroit Free Press will "sizably reduce its staff of reporters." Editor Jeff Taylor leaves to helm the Indianapolis Star while current DFP editor and publisher Paul Anger tells Motor City Muckraker that the cuts "won't be tiny."... Greg Veis returns to The New Republic as executive editor while Michael Schaffer jumps onboard as editorial director. The pair come from The New York Times Magazine and the Washington City Paper, respectively... The dapper Darhil Crooks joins The Atlantic as creative director. He had been in the same position at Ebony and previously worked at Esquire...

CNN cancels John King, USA. The network is spinning the move as one that gives the anchor more time to report on the ground, but the program's poor ratings made the decision easier... Madeline McIntosh takes over as chief operating officer at Random House Inc. She had been president of sales, operations and digital there, and will continue to perform those duties as well. McIntosh started at RH in 1994... Ed Wasserman joins University of California at Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism as dean. He had been John S. and James L. Knight Foundation professor of journalism ethics at Washington and Lee...

Facebook's CTO Bret Taylor will leave the social network later this summer to start a company with Google's App Engine founder and tech lead, Kevin Gibbs... Mark S. Luckie, founder of 10,000 Words, leaves the Washington Post to join Twitter as creative content manager for journalism. In his words, the lofty title means he will be finding "creative ways journalists use the platform, increase engagement and elevate Twitter use in newsrooms."...

Natalia Schultz joins Saatchi & Saatchi as EVP and chief talent officer of the Americas. She left Grey New York three months ago in order to "pursue new opportunities."... Michael Goldberg moves to Deutsch New York as partner and chief marketing officer. Most recently, he had been at Porter Novelli but previously worked at Zimmerman, rising to EVP/CMO... Weber Shandwick hires Ozzy Farman, Herb Sawyer, and Kerry Lange as part of its digital push... And there are changes at MTV, Huffington Post Media Group and more...
