The great thing about digital innovation in the publishing industry is that pretty much anyone can publish a book. On the flip side, the not-so-great thing about digital innovation is that, well, pretty much anyone can publish a book.
If you're trying to make a name for yourself and an audience for your writing, it's a noisy world out there. In fact, more than 391,000 self-published books were released in 2012 alone, and that says nothing of the books that were traditionally published. Even authors signed to a major house quickly discover that much of the marketing burden for their book still falls on their shoulders.
