Piers Morgan Live Ending; Tamron Hall Joins Today

Piers Morgan's CNN show is being cancelled. The Englishman replaced Larry King three years ago but never found an audience. "It’s been a painful period and lately we have taken a bath in the ratings," he told The New York Times' David Carr. Morgan and CNN president Jeff Zucker agreed to pull the plug on Piers Morgan Live, possibly as early as March. The move frees up Zucker, who is trying pretty much anything he can think of, to create something new in the 9 p.m. time slot. That could include a show for Bill Weir. Less than six months ago, Morgan told CBS This Morning that he would "be taken out of CNN kicking and screaming." The tone seems to have changed...

Tamron Hall is Today's newest hire. She joins Al Roker, Natalie Morales and Willie Geist in the 9 a.m. hour. She will continue anchoring a show on MSNBC as well, although that program moves to 11 a.m. “She brings wit, enthusiasm and a keen sensibility to an all-around fantastic team, and I think Tamron, Al, Natalie and Willie will have a lot of fun together hosting the third hour," Today executive producer Don Nash said of the hire... Eric Shapiro retires after 51 years. He had be news director at CBS Evening News. He began his career more than five decades ago in the mail room... Fox's film department is after Stacey Snider, who is currently DreamWorks co-chairman and CEO, for its top spot...

The New York Times recruits Josh Barro for David Leonhardt's data/policy team. He had been politics editor at Business Insider and is also a frequent contributor to MSNBC. Before BI, Barro worked at Bloomberg View. The Times loses Thomas Middelhoff, who will leave the company's board. Thirteen other directors will seek re-election... Randy Minor returns to New York. He moved to Elle in December, replacing Paul Ritter as design director. No reason was given for his short stint at the Hearst-owned publication... Wired hires Corey Wilson as senior director of communciations. He had been director of communications at GQ...

@GSElevator got a book deal and now he has a name: John Lefevre. According to The New York Times, he's a 34-year-old former bond executive living in Texas. He has never worked at Goldman Sachs, despite saying he did in 2011. Details, details... While we're on the subject of anonymity, GQ's Lauren Bans reveals that she was the brain behind the media-world brilliance of @CondeElevator... Say Media recruits Anne-Marie Guarnieri as editor-in-chief of xoVain. She had been senior beauty editor at Allure... And there are changes at Health, The Washington Post and more...
