Background: My, how The Advocate has grown. Sprouting from its humble beginnings as a mimeographed newsletter dispensing information to its local Los Angeles audience, its ownership has changed and coverage has grown, but its editorial mission of reporting for an LGBT audience is still the same -- just on a larger scale. Now in its 45th year, the glossy operates both print and digital editions, and a heavily trafficked website that fit neatly under The Advocate's tagline of "America's leading gay news and entertainment magazine." Still, its commitment to conveying the events, experiences and figures relevant to gay men and lesbians is as fresh as it was back in The Advocate's simpler days.
Brand expansion over the years means the mag has a growing international following in Canada, Mexico, Australia and the UK. Published by Here Media, the same company that produces gay fashion, style and culture bible Out, The Advocate is in a class by itself -- literally. "We're really the only magazine in the space. There are lesbian-specific publications, there are trans-specific publications, there are gay men-specific publications," explained editor-in-chief Matthew Breen, "but in terms of an LGBT magazine, we really don't have competitors." With that in mind, freelancers gunning for a space in the publication trifecta should be pondering news, politics, analysis and culture with a gay and lesbian angle....
