Recession-Themed Fetes Fill Media's Dance Card

Week of December 15, 2008

Welcome to The Press List, our weekly newsletter alerting you to upcoming media events worth knowing about. Holiday vacations may be a distant memory for many media folks dealing with the economic crisis, but whether you're heading out of town or stuck at home, there's still a tasty assortment of media parties, panels, and networking to busy yourself with this week before you get your vacation time.

We may not know what to call it, but we sure know how to weave drinking into it: The holidays are proving that recession-themed parties are a burgeoning trend on the media scene. There are three downturn-centric events on our calendar this week, including the Holiday Recession Edition of TechSushi on Monday, a Recession Buster potluck company holiday party, and the the newly-formed American Society of Sh*tcanned Media Elites (ASSME) shindig for "recently downsized magazine, newspaper, publishing, advertising, TV and Web professionals." One of the masterminds behind the ASSME event, former Radar executive editor Aaron Gell, told The Press List, "People have asked me if we're trying to take on mediabistro. For now it's just a party, but Laurel better watch her back." Sounds like we might be in for a media party host showdown. Our money's on the boa-clad one, who's hosting a holiday shindig of her own this Thursday. Jewcy's bash on Wednesday should be another holiday highlight, promising "Yiddishe Yuletide traditions like Chinese food, movies, and free booze."

Last week started off with the wedding of onetime Washingtonienne sex blogger Jessica Cutler. Our invitation must have gotten lost in the mail, but Sheila McClear was there to report for the Observer and apparently Brooke Shields accidentally walked in on the reception.

Cutler may have retired from telling all about her sex life, but TMI is still en vogue for author Michael Wolff. At last week's the celebration for his Rupert Murdoch biography The Man Who Owns the News Wolff told FishbowlNY.com that the Fox News boss always "takes an enema before a long-haul flight." On the list of reasons to keep the eggnog coming, searing that one from memory is ranking pretty high right now.

Later in the week, we went to the final Media Meshing hosted by Richard Blakeley on Thursday. In the rain-soaked crowd, we saw Tumblr founder David Karp being congratulated on his recent windfall by his ex-girlfriend, CNet blogger Caroline McCarthy.

After completing the rest of the holiday party circuit this week, we'll be on a brief break -- The Press List will return on the first Monday of 2009 to forecast which media events you won't want to miss, along with what went down at the hottest year-end happenings. Be sure to check out 'Conferences, Etc.' and 'Beyond New York' for media events beyond the five boroughs in Palo Alto and Seattle, and have yourselves a merry rest of the media year...
