After Funding Runs Out, Everyblock’s Still Chugging Along
Yanno Everyblock, the Knight Foundation-funded granular, block-specific news feed? Yesterday was the last day of the funding period, so presumably Adrian Holovaty and his team have used up the $1.1 million dollars from Knight.
But Holovaty tells us that Everyblock’s still going. “We’re going to continue operating EveryBlock as a private company,” he wrote in an e-mail. “Beyond continuing our steady expansion of new cities and more data types in existing cities, we have some exciting ideas planned around revolutionizing the whole EveryBlock experience itself.”
And! As part of the grant terms, Everyblock’s releasing its source code under the GPL. Developers can take the Everyblock “bones” and make something completely different from it…we can’t wait to see what innovations will come of this.
Meanwhile, Everyblock probably could use some cash. They’re planning to experiment with advertising, but don’t appear to have rolled it out yet. Local advertisers, go forth and spend money!
