KPFA, Citing Cash Problems, Cuts Nine

Listener-supported Pacifica Foundation radio station KPFA in the Bay Area cut nine jobs earlier this month. Seven employees took buyouts but two, Morning Show co-hosts Brian Edwards-Tiekert and Aimee Allison were laid off, several sources report.

KPFA is the oldest listener-sponsored radio station in the country but is running low on donations, the station said via a press release. “During Fiscal Year 2009, the station spent almost $575,000 more than it took in. In the fiscal year that ended September 30, KPFA spent $480,000 more than it took in.” The job cuts will save $320,000 over the rest of the fiscal year.
