Salary.com just released their results to their annual survey, Wasting Time at Work. The numbers tell all: About 69 percent of the 1,000 employees in the survey indicated they have indeed wasted time at work. This is up from 64 percent last year.

Approximately one-third of respondents revealed they waste 30 minutes or less each day whereas almost one-quarter indicated they waste between 30 and 60 minutes each day. About 11 percent claimed they waste a few hours of non-work things each day. Scary stat, huh?

Lastly, about 10 percent ‘fessed they never waste time during the day. Really? 

In case you’re wondering how exactly the respondents waste time, the interweb was a big culprit. Social media sites were the most visited, then online shopping, entertainment/lifestyle, sports and then travel.

Facebook topped the list at 15 percent, followed by Yahoo! (14 percent), LinkedIn (10 percent), Google+ (eight percent), Amazon (six percent), ESPN, YouTube, Twitter and Pinterest (all at four percent).

While the survey attempted to pinpoint why we waste time with answers ranging from feeling unsatisfied to boredom, it also broke it down by gender. Men waste more time than women and employees from 26 to 32 years-old and 33 to 39 years-old waste more time than their 18 – 25 year-old counterparts.

Tuesday mornings seem to be the most productive time during the week whereas the most popular time to slack off was typically the 3 to 5 p.m. time slot.

Lastly, there is a correlation between education and wasting time. Per the survey, the more educated you are, the more likely you are to be unproductive. That is, 76 percent of people with their doctorate degrees waste time every day compared to 59 percent of respondents with a high school diploma.
