The State Of Journalism Jobs Today: Crossdressing Required?

Brian Ries, the food critic for Creative Loafing in Sarasota and Tampa, has been promoted to editor of the Sarasota edition.

That’s awesome.

But. They’re not filling Ries’ food critic position.

Ries is still going to be writing restaurant reviews, too.

Problem: editors are much more visible than anonymous restaurant critics.

“Soon, there will be plenty of pictures online that restaurants could use to identify me, if they want to go to the bother,” Ries wrote in a blog post. “I won’t make it easy for them — I’ll continue to make reservations under another name, use an alias credit card, and shave my legs to match the summer dresses I plan on wearing as a disguise.”

Ruth Reichl, eat your heart out.

Conde Nast’s Most Drastic Cuts Yet

cdn.jpgAfter shuttering two magazines and laying off hundreds of employees, Conde Nast is finally preparing to make the biggest cuts of all. As FishBowlNY reported this morning, Conde Nast will be cutting their chauffeur-driven Mercedes.

Instead, going to work everyday, you can now see New Yorker Editor-in-Chief David Remnick, Gourmet Editor-in-Chief Ruth Reichl, David Carey, a group executive president who oversees Golf Digest, Wired and Portfolio, and Portfolio Publisher William Li. all riding the subway. No one had asked where Anna Wintour is yet.

Will all this sacrifice really matter in the end though? Rumors from Conde Nast say that the company is still gearing up for another round of layoffs.
