How To Pitch: Afar

Bypass the touristy fluff and dig into authenticity to write for this luxury travel mag.

By Janelle Harris - July 14, 2015
The information in this article is current and accurate.

Circulation: 250,000
Frequency: Seven issues a year
Special issues: The editorial calendar is being fleshed out for 2016 and will include themed issues on food and spirits, style and design, exceptional travel experiences, and travel vanguard. Once complete, it will be available online.

Background: For some vacationers, a resort is a perfectly pleasant, perfectly postcard-worthy place to spend a few days away from everyday life. And that's fine. For others, there's the more hands-on experience of wringing the place they're visiting for all it's worth -- interacting with the locals, going off the touristy trail to shop in real marketplaces, and eating indigenous, authentically prepared meals. Those globe-trotters are the prototype of the Afar reader.

The six-year-old pub, winner of the James Beard Foundation Award for Journalism in 2015 and named Adweek's Hottest Travel Magazine in 2013, has set itself apart from bigger-brand mags by exploring travel with an in-depth perspective. "So many of the other magazines out there were focusing on sightseeing and escapist travel, where you just sort of picked things off the list. We really felt like there were travelers out there who traveled to really connect with locals and come up with a deeper understanding of a place and its people," said vp and editor in chief Julia Cosgrove. So from the very first issue, Afar has built its content around an enthusiasm for experiential travel.
