NYT Cuts 100 Newsroom Jobs; Gossip Sites Poach Columnists
October 20, 2009 The New York Timesplans to cut 100 more newsroom jobs. Everyone will be offered a buyout, but the company will resort to involuntary layoffs if not enough staffers accept the buyout. The eventual total will represent roughly eight percent of the workforce. In February 2008, the paper let go a similar number of editorial staffers, and in May of this year, the Times Guild voted to impose a five percent pay cut. Clearly, those measures weren't enough...
