CNBC Star Jumps To Rival Net, Bloomberg View Staffs Up

April 29, 2011
Bill Simmons' website has a name: Grantland.com. The moniker comes from Grantland Rice, the legendary writer who penned one of the best ledes ever: "Outlined against a blue-gray October sky the Four Horsemen rode again. In dramatic lore they are known as famine, pestilence, destruction and death. These are only aliases. Their real names are: Stuhldreher, Miller, Crowley and Layden." Simmons brings with him a soon-to-be legendary cast of characters including GQ's Dan Fierman, New York's Lane Brown and, brilliantly, Jay Caspian King. Chuck Klosterman, Malcolm Gladwell, and Dave Eggers will contribute as well. Others involved include Michael Weinreb, Katie Baker, Molly Lambert, Chris Ryan, and Patrice Evans, with more to come in the future. It's hard to overstate how great this can be when it launches in June, but perhaps the Four Horsemen will soon have some company. Elsewhere at the Worldwide Leader, Ian Darke and Julie Foudy will head up ESPN's coverage of the Women's World Cup this summer. The tournament runs from June 26 through July 17...

Bloomberg View is making itself a force to be reckoned with, hiring blue chip staffers including William Cohan, Ron Klain, and Yale Law professor Stephen L. Carter. Former Slate editor Michael Kinsley and Wall Street Journal editor George Anders join the editorial board for the site that's launching in late May; WaPo's Ezra Klein will also contribute... And, speaking of WSJ, the paper announced a slew of promotions, including a prestigious bump up to Page One for Alix Freedman... Ousted "Ethicist" columnist Randy Cohen is not happy about losing his job...

CNBC's Erin Burnett jumps to CNN where she will anchor a weekday general news program as chief business and economics correspondent. It's a big loss for the financial channel, which touted Burnett as one of its rising stars... Meredith Vieria plans to leave the Today show in June. Ann Curry will replace her. There's no new news on the Matt Lauer front, although rumors still persist that he will join Katie Couric on her new syndicated show... Mark Pedowitz takes over as president of The CW. He replaces Dawn Ostroff who is leaving her gig as entertainment chief... Tony Cassara steps in as CEO of Young Broadcasting, replacing CEO Vince Young who resigned in March... Face the Nation executive producer Carin Pratt leaves the show after 27 years. She's moving to Vermont...

AOL cancels its news department. The Internet company will fold its division into the Huffington Post, which will now produce all the original content for both brands. Presumably, the cuts to AOL's editorial department will continue to come as Arianna's site gains more traction... And there are changes at Complex Media, W, and more...
